The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) is a global, non-profit organization that promotes safety standards, education, training, and advocacy on fire and electrical-related hazards. Established in as a way to standardize the use of fire sprinkler systems, the NFPA’s scope grew to include building design, rescue response, electrical codes, and other safety concerns. NFPA stands for the National Fire Protection Association. It is a trade association that is based in the United States, but has international members as well. This association creates standards and codes that are used by businesses, local governments, and other organizations to help improve fire safety. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) developed a hazard identification system for emergency responders that is still in use today. In the past some chemical manufacturers used NFPA diamonds on their products, but now labels are required to use GHS labeling.
Each section is used to identify a different category of potential hazards. The blue section of the NFPA color code symbolizes health hazards. A health hazard rating is determined by the potential for a material to pose risks beyond those of ordinary combustible materials. If emergency personnel are not using the specialized personal protective equipment and are exposed to materials that are rated at the highest health hazard severity, the consequences could be lethal.
Flammability hazards are displayed with the red color code. As different materials have different flashpoints, it is important to rate them and alert responders to this information. Natural gas, for instance, is highly flammable under normal temperatures and pressures and is one material with the highest rating for this color code. Instability, or reactivity, is shown in the yellow area.
This part of the color code is for materials that could be unstable during an emergency situation. Instability can vary from minor chemical changes to explosive reactions. The last section of the NFPA color code is white. This area is often blank, as it is intended for special hazards beyond health, flammability, or instability and does not apply to a majority of hazardous materials.
